Understanding Subsurface Utility Engineering (S.U.E.)
Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), commonly referred to as utility locating, is a precise method used to identify and expose underground utilities—such as pipes, cables, and conduits—to prevent costly and potentially dangerous utility strikes. This process provides accurate utility data that supports safer construction, design, and excavation activities.
SUE begins with reviewing existing maps, as-built drawings, and records, followed by using advanced electronic locating tools to determine where underground utilities are likely positioned. Once these utilities are mapped, vacuum excavation is used to safely expose them. This non-destructive method uses pressurized air or water to loosen soil while a powerful vacuum removes it, creating small, controlled potholes.
By exposing a small section of each utility, crews can visually confirm its exact location, depth, size, and material. After verification, the utility is measured, marked, and fully documented to ensure accurate records for ongoing and future project planning.
