What is Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE)?

ENSURING SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

SUE, also known as utility locating, is a method used to precisely identify and expose underground utilities such as pipes, cables, and conduits, to avoid damage due to accidental utility strikes, which can be costly and dangerous. This is done by first reviewing maps and blueprints and using electronic utility detection tools to determine where underground utilities might be located. Small potholes are then carefully placed at the locations where utilities are expected to be by using vacuum excavation equipment, which uses pressurized air or water to break up the soil and a vacuum to safely remove it. The goal is to carefully expose a small section of the utility, allowing workers to visually confirm its exact location, depth, and type. Once located, the utility is measured and marked, and its location is documented to ensure it can be referenced during the project.

Benefits of Subsurface Utility Engineering

SUE brings precision, efficiency, and safety:

  • Provides accurate information about underground infrastructure, without the invasiveness of backhoe digging methods
  • Available year-round in a wide range of applications
  • Protects workers and the public from the impacts of infrastructure damage, with information that can safeguard critical utility and telecommunication systems
